Cardinal women shut out Cortland

PLATTSBURGH — Following a weekend sweep of No. 3 Elmira College, the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team wasn’t going to settle with a subpar performance against Cortland State.

The No. 1-ranked Cardinals (17-0-1, 10-0 ECAC West) used a four-goal surge in the second period en route to a 7-0 drubbing of the Red Dragons (4-12-1, 4-7) Friday afternoon.

After the middle stanza’s conclusion, Plattsburgh held a 31-6 lead in shots on goal and a 5-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

“We continued to do what we were doing in the first period — put the puck on net,” Cardinals coach Kevin Houle said. “We got the goalie moving, and we were fortunate to find some holes in the second. We were able to capitalize on opportunities and put points on the board.”

Shannon Stewart accounted for two goals and one assist, while senior captain Teal Gove buried two markers in the seven-goal rout.

“(Stewart) and (Gove) continue to score,” Houle said. “They each had a pretty impressive performance and have been burying the puck for us. It was a total team effort (Friday).”

Bridget Balisy picked up her second of the year, while Morgan MacInnis added her sixth in the third to extend the differential to 7-0.

Plattsburgh limited Cortland to nine total shots throughout the contest and surrendered no more than three in a single period.

“They might’ve had a couple of chances following an expired power play in the second period,” Houle said. “It’s a credit to our offensive play. We spent a lot of time in their end. I’d like to see us come out of our end a little better, though. But we limited their time in our own end with puck possession.”

Sydney Aveson was credited with her fourteenth win and fourth shutout of the season.

Stewart, Gove and MacInnis were named the three stars of the game.

Plattsburgh concludes its weekend series versus Cortland today at 3 p.m.
