Lassell Rittenhouse Comegys

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Lassell Rittenhouse Comegys of Dover-Foxcroft died Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Hibbard Nursing Home. She was 99.

She was born Aug. 31, 1912, in Baltimore, Md., daughter of the late James Albert and Belle Gatch Rittenhouse.

Mrs. Comegys graduated from the Towson Normal School, Towson, Md., as an elementary school teacher.

In 1934 she married Dr. Richard W. Comegys of Millington, Md. They settled in Clayton, Del., where she assisted her husband in his general practice.

During World War II, she taught school while he was overseas. She was a volunteer Red Cross driver at the Dover Air Base. She was involved as a Brownie Scout leader, a Cub Scout den mother, and church activities including many leadership roles. She authored a book, Thy People, the story of her husband's medical practice, including his time as a medical officer, and the tales of a growing family.

Mrs. Comegys moved to Main Street West in Dover-Foxcroft in 2000. She developed a group of knitters in the greater community who created over a hundred sets of caps and scarves each year for the Seaman's Institute. She was a lifelong Episcopalian and was most recently a member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, Dover-Foxcroft, where she especially enjoyed being on the altar guild.

She is survived by one daughter, Tarun Comegys Johns of Greenville, Maine; two sons, David R. and Carolyn Comegys of AuSable Forks and Robert R. and Janet Comegys of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Rebecca Comegys of Rochester, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ashby and Wynn Rittenhouse of Pomfret Center, Conn., and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard W. Comegys, and her eldest son, Richard W. Comegys Jr.

A service will be held 1 p.m. Feb. 18 at St. Augustine's Church, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine. Interment will be in Oxford, Md, in the summer.

Memorial contributions may be made to one's preferred charity.
