WEST CHAZY — Mr. Douglas E. Vassar, 76, of Route 22 in West Chazy, passed away Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany with family by his side.
He was born in Plattsburgh on Nov. 1, 1936, the son of the late Ross and Ruth (Parsons) Vassar.
Douglas was employed at Georgia Pacific for over 35 years and retired as a Supervisor. He also recently retired from Beekmantown Central School as a custodian. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in West Chazy. He was a member of the West Chazy Fire Department and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed his Cadillac, camping, traveling, the outdoors, helping people, spending time with his family and his dog "Kia".
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Theresa (Jennette) Vassar; his children and their spouses, Kevin and Mary "Rill" Vassar, Kathy and Rick Morrison, Karen and Dan Noonan, all of West Chazy, Keith Vassar and companion Rick Lamoy of Morrisonville; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Vassar of Plattsburgh; his siblings and their spouses, Dawn Brown of Plattsburgh, Bruce and Elizabeth Vassar of Goose Creek, S.C., Reginald Vassar of Champlain; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sharron and John Benware of West Chazy; eight grandchildren and spouses, Shannon Vassar, Shane Vassar and companion Missy Cook, Kimberly and Michael Martino, Heather and Josh Porter, Kristen and Andrew Lifer, Keri Noonan, Kylie Vassar and Katie Vassar, five great- grandchildren, Kent, Kyle, Kassidy, Hailey and Kailynn; and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Keith Joseph Vassar, and two brothers, Ross Jr. and Wayne Vassar, passed away earlier.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013 at St. Joseph's Church in West Chazy. Interment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be offered to the FitzPatrick Cancer Center.
