Edwain Raymond Knox Jr.

MALONE — Edwain Raymond Knox Jr., 90, formerly of 662 Lake Road, Chateaugay, N.Y., died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at the Franklin County Nursing Home where he had been a patient since Dec. 12. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., July 27, 1922, he was the son of Edwain R. and Grace Thieu Knox Sr.

He first married Kathryn Mellon in 1952. She predeceased him in 1993. He later married Sondra Primeau Poupore in Oct. of 1998. She survives.

He attended schools in New York and earned his master's degree in mining engineering from Columbia University. He was first employed as a mining engineer for Republic Steel in Lyon Mountain from 1948 until the mines closed. During the times he was employed as mine manager by Republic Steel, the operation was the largest iron ore mine in the world. The men that worked with him thought of him as a friend and co-worker and not as a boss. Following the closure of the mines he became employed by Essex County as director of the Real Property Tax office. He held that position for 10 years and retired in 1987.

Ed was an avid duplicate bridge player and a good one at that. He made many friends in Duplicate Bridge Clubs in the North Country and in Fla., where he spent many winters. Ed was usually the first one to get up and offer to help carry this or do whatever needed to be done. He was much liked and respected. In his younger years Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his lake front property on Upper Chateaugay Lake.

Besides his wife, three children survive him: Grace Knox, Edwain Knox III and John Knox. Three grandchildren: Keegan Knox, Evan Knox and Georgianna Knox. One sister: Grace Zimmerman; a sister-in-law: Margaret Curtin; two brothers-in-law: John Mellon and Donald Mellon. Three stepchildren: Richard Poupore, John Poupore and Julie Valentine. Four stepgrandchildren: Christopher Poupore and his wife Kristen, Samantha Poupore, Erika Valentine and Emily Valentine.

Besides his first wife and parents, he was predeceased a brother, Dana Knox, and a grandson, Riley Knox.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26 in the St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, in St. Patrick's Church in Chateaugay, with Rev. John Looby officiating. Spring burial will take place in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
