PLATTSBURGH — Shirley Marie Young, 79, formerly of Lakeside Court, Cliff Haven, Plattsburgh, died Saturday, March 9, 2013, at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington, Vt., with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, Canada, July 6, 1933, the daughter of the late Newton and Maude Smith. She grew up in Newfoundland and graduated from Cornerbrook High School.
Mrs. Young will be remembered fondly by generations of Peru Central School graduates for her 22 years at Peru Central. She retired in 2004. Shirley was a big supporter of Peru Central's Hockey Team in the late 70's and especially enjoyed rooting for her son, Wilfred Young.
Since 1976 Shirley has been an active member, and communicant of Our Lady of Victory Church in Plattsburgh. She served as lector for many years.
She enjoyed watching her grandson, Evan, participate in a variety of activities, as well as shopping with her loving daughter, Annette Ormsby.
Survivors include her children, daughter, Annette Ormsby and her husband, Craig of Schuyler Falls, and son, Wilfred Young and his companion Cathy Duprey of Plattsburgh; grandchildren, Evan Ormsby, and Dennis Young; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Young in 1976; son, Allan "Newfy" Young in 2002; her grandson, Jacob Young in 2012; and several siblings.
At Shirley's request there will be no public calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church in Plattsburgh with Rev. William G. Reamer, parish pastor, celebrating.
