Alexander C. Mikus

SCHUYLER FALLS — Alexander C. Mikus, 82, of the Peasleeville Road, Schuyler Falls, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

He was born in White Plains, Feb. 11, 1931, the son of Alexander and Ethel (Brown) Mikus. He grew up in Scarsdale, N.Y. and attended Scarsdale High School.

He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Richard E. Krause from 1949 until 1950 and aboard the USS Millet from 1950 until his honorable discharge in 1952.

"Big Al", as he was fondly referred to by family and friends, was a 55 year life member of the Local Union #543 Steam Fitters in Yonkers and served 40 years for Johnson Controls until he retired in 1993.

Al was a former resident of the Shrub Oak Westchester County, served on the Board of Education for Lakeland School District from 1972 until 1978, and was a member of the American Legion Post 1619.

Survivors include his children, Glenn Mikus of Wappinger Falls, Colleen Mikus Tonyes and husband John of Hopewell Junction and Cory Mikus of Schuyler Flls; grandchildren, Colin Mikus, Nicholaus Mikus, Paige Tonyes and Shaun Tonyes; great-grandchild, Jamie Mikus; his siblings, Robert Mikus of Albany, James Mikus of Milton, Fla. and Irene Mikus Tegeder of Lagrangeville; sister-in-law, Doris Mikus; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Janet Youngs Mikus; and brothers, Charles Mikus and Kenneth Mikus.

Calling hours will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A prayer service and military honors will follow at 3:30 p.m. at the Whispering Maples Memorial Mausoleum in Plattsburgh with Rev. William G. Reamer, CVPH Chaplain, officiating.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Assistance Center, Sibley Hall, Room 227, 101 Broad St., Plattsburgh, NY, 12901.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.
