PORT HENRY — A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2010, in Union Cemetery, Port Henry, the Rev. Alice Hobbs officiating.
W. (Wilbur) Joel Dobson, age 62, of Greer, S.C., died Jan. 23, 2010, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson, S.C., after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer's.
Joel was born Aug. 27, 1947, in Ticonderoga to Floyd Clark and (Helen) Virginia Eddy Dobson. He grew up in Port Henry and was a 1965 graduate of Moriah Central High School. He attended the University of Virginia on a full Navy ROTC scholarship, graduating in 1970 with a Bachelor's of Science in electrical engineering and a minor in English.
Joel served nine years as an officer in the U.S. Navy, including two tours in Viet Nam and ending as chief engineer of the destroyer USS Donald B. Beary. He worked for Michelin North America 25 years, from 1979 until his retirement 2004, due to Alzheimer's. At Michelin he held many positions in South Carolina and France. He pursued many hobbies throughout his life, including stamp collecting and achieving his lifetime goal of hiking all 46 of the peaks over 4,000 feet high in the Adirondack Mountains.
He was married to Barbara Joyce on June 13, 1970. They had one son, William Joel Dobson of Washington, D.C., who survives. Joel married Alice B. Gander Jan. 6, 1988, in St. Thomas, USVI. She survives; as does his sister, Mary Janet Nerrie of Wolfeboro, N.H. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Katharine Connor Dobson; his nieces, Paige Nerrie of Bristol, R.I., Lori Bowen of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and Jody Risko of Albany, N.Y. He is survived by three great-nieces, Molly, Sarah and Jill Risko of Albany, N.Y. His former wife, Barbara Dobson of Spartanburg, S.C., also survives.
Joel was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Clark Dobson; and his sister, Helen Bowen.
Harland Funeral Home of Port Henry is serving the Dobson family.
