MOOERS — Clifton H. Higgins, 84, of the Fee Road, Mooers, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010 at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh with his loving family by his side.
He was born in Mooers, Aug. 6, 1926, the son of Edward J. and Edna (Simpson) Higgins. He was a lifelong resident of Mooers, and at 17 enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII until his honorable discharge in 1946. During his Navy career Culminate in the First Wave invasion of Normandy assigned to amphibious assault craft LST 356 in the following weeks he made 39 trips under fire, then was rotated back to the states for refitting.
He studied at Troy Vocational School for engineering and later completed autobody repair training in Troy. Clifton worked for Harris Graphics in Champlain for 35 years prior to retiring. Clifton was a member of the VFW in Champlain and a dedicated firefighter and member of the Mooers Fire Department for nearly 50 years.
He enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing, coin and stamp collecting, wine tasting. Clifton was passionate about growing roses for his Lovie (wife).
Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Joyce (Allen) Higgins; children, Floyd Walker and his wife, Shelia, of Churubusco, Leslie Walker and his wife, Peg, of Standfordville, Brenda Akey of Plattsburgh, Darlene Higgins of Plattsburgh, Jeffrey Higgins and his wife, Mary, of Chazy; grandchildren, Jamie Walker and his wife, Ann, Tera Fountain and her husband, Joe, Jeremy Walker, Jonathan Higgins and his wife, Jessi, Danielle Hamel, Sean Higgins, Aaron Akey and Kevin Hartpence; great-grandchildren, Emily Fountain, Janessa Walker, Barbara Walker, Jamie Walker, Jesse Fountain and Ethan Higgins; sister, Kathy Bountanger and her husband, Dick, of Burlington, VT; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Walter "Timmy" Higgins, John "Mike" Bernard; sister, Virginia "Toni" Lorraine; granddaughter, Angel Hamel; two sons-in-law, Drew Hamel and Don Akey; and lifelong best friend, Rodney Garrand.
Calling hours will be held Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers. Members of the Mooers Volunteer Fire Department will meet at the Hamilton Funeral Home Monday at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Mooers with Rev. Gerald A. Cerank, parish pastor, celebrating. Burial will be in the spring in the parish cemetery.
