Kalvin Sunderland McDougal

LEWIS — Kalvin Sunderland McDougal died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, in the loving arms of his family, after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 17, 1932, to Kelley Kalvin McDougal and Verda Eleanor (Sunderland) McDougal, Kalvin grew up and graduated in Elizabethtown, N.Y. After graduation, Kalvin entered the U.S. Navy with his lifelong friend, Edward (Bud) Drummond for a term of four years. Kalvin served during the Korean War and earned an Honorable Discharge, the National Defense Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Kalvin was married to Norma (Dickinson) McDougal for 17 years and had four children, Deborah McDougal Smith (Daniel T. LaMere Sr.) of Elizabethtown, Gordon G. McDougal of Elizabethtown, Cliff B. McDougal of Elizabethtown, and Travis J. McDougal (Nora) of Lewis. Along with his children, Kalvin is survived by one brother, Johnny J. McDougal (Irene) of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Dale K. Smith of Wilmington, N.Y., and Josie J. Perks of Lake Placid; five grandchildren, Billie Jay Bledsaw (Maria) of Layton, Utah, Travis J. McDougal Jr. and Kristen L. McDougal of Plattsburgh, Julius Barreto (Alison) of Saranac Lake, Crystal Grady (Jeremy) of Elizabethtown; and two great-grandchildren, Jayden Rock and Laela Barreto; along with many neices and nephews. He is also survived by many special friends whom he loved as family, Gerald W. Smith of Lewis, Susan Bullock of Elizabethtown, Leesa Marin of Lewis, Joanne Jackson and Wyatt of Lewis, Little Miss Sadie and his many loyal friends at the Halfway House Restaurant in Elizabethtown.

After leaving the Navy, "Kal" moved to Chico, Calif., where he worked for the Kiewit Company as Office Manager for about three years. He then moved back to the area and worked for International Paper until he began working for Essex County Horace Nye Home, where he retired as Maintenance Supervisor.

Kalvin was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Everett who died as an infant; a sister, Phoebe J. Stalker of Edwards, N.Y.; his companion of many years, Carole (Music) Carpenter; and a granddaughter, Ashley Marie Grady of Elizabethtown.

He was a humble man who lived simply and loved his family, his friends and his country. He will be deeply missed.

His family would like to invite all who loved Kal to a celebration of his life and prayer service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24., with Reverend Fred Shaw, at Kal's home at 9277 Route 9, Lewis, NY.
