PERU — James E. Hutchinson, 94, of Birchwood Drive, Peru died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at his home.
He was born in Southport, N.C., July 3, 1916, the son of James E. Hutchinson Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth (Lyon) Hutchinson. Jim came to the North Country following the death of his father. His mother was a native of Plattsburgh.
Jim graduated from Plattsburgh High School and was awarded degrees from SUC Plattsburgh, SUC Albany, and the University of Vermont. A veteran of World War II, he served three years with the 104th Division as Regimental Communications Chief in the European Theater of Operations and his decorations include The European-African-Middle Eastern service Medal with three battle Stars and the Bronze Star Medal. After completing military service, Jim was employed as a teacher in the Schuyler Falls Village School. In Sept. of 1946, he joined the faculty of the Peru Central District as a teacher of English and History. From 1952, he served as principal and in 1963 he served as superintendent of schools until his retirement in 1972. He was a member of the Peru Community Church. Following his retirement, Jim was an instructor at the State University, an instructor for Empire College and acting manager for WCFE Channel 57. He was also a member of the Clinton County Legislature, the Clinton County Civil Service Commission and Clinton County Director of Off Track Betting. Over the years, Jim served in many public and service capacities. He served on the boards of the CVPH Medical Center, the Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System, the Clinton County Industrial Development Agency and the State University College Foundation. He was a trustee of Clinton Community College, a member of the Peru Lions Club and Post 309 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia Hutchinson and her husband Phil Hunter of Elmira, N.Y. He was predeceased by his parents; and his wife, Edna L. Hutchinson, Sept. 26, 2009.
At Jim's request, there will be no public calling hours or services. He will be interred with his wife in St. Augustine's Cemetery in Peru. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.
