LEONARD V. RASCOE

MOOERS — Leonard V. Rascoe, 92, formerly of Main Street, Mooers, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012 at the Evergreen Valley Nursing Home in Plattsburgh.

He was born in Onchiota, Nov. 30, 1919, the son of Moses and Edith (Farewell) Rascoe.

Leonard served in the United States Army in the 1254th Engineer Combat Battalion B Company as Captain and was honorably discharged in 1946. The "Fighting First" under Lt. Rascoe, the bridge platoon had the distinction of building one of the first dual carriage Bailey Bridges constructed in the ETO. Later was promoted to Captain.

Mr. Rascoe graduated from Oswego State Teachers College and received his Masters/Adm. from St. Lawrence University. He was President of fraternal organizations, Psi Phi and Sigma phi epsilon.

Leonard was an Industrial Arts Teacher from 1947 until his retirement in 1984. He taught at Mooers Central School from 1947 to 1970 and at Northeastern Clinton Central School from 1970 until his retirement. He served as the Principal for summer school.

He was a founding/charter member of the Mooers Volunteer Fire Department and assisted in building the first fire truck in 1948. Leonard was a board member of the Mooers Free Library, Mooers Senior Citizens Council, and served as President of the New York State Retired Teachers Association for many years. He was also Boy Scout Commissioner for Northeastern New York, President/Member of VFW Mooers and American Legion Mooers, and Member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Violet R. (Kentile) Rascoe whom he married, Sept. 11, 1944; children, Sandra Gray and husband Doug, of Palm Coast, Fla., Linda Robor of Mooers Forks, Leonard T. Rascoe and wife Patti, of North Fort Myers, Fla., Theresa Schwartz and husband Greg, of Mt. Home, Idaho, and Bradley Rascoe and wife Julie, of Westport; grandchildren, Richard Gray, Virginia Gray, Stephanie Gray, Matthew Robor, Jennifer Thornton, Joshua Schwartz, Molly Rascoe and Emily Rascoe; great-grandchildren, Douglas, Josephine, Gavin, Robyn, Kaleb, Mikayla, Tanner and Parker; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and siblings, Bernard, Gordon, Francis, Viola Rascoe, and Florence Bowen.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers. A funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home with Military Honors. Committal prayers will be offered at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Saranac Lake.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in his memory to the Mooers Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 242, Mooers, NY, 12958.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 793 Gilbert Road, Mooers.
