Philip E. Rice

SARANAC — Philip E. Rice, 71, of Picketts Corners Road, Saranac, died at his home on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 with his family by his side. Philip, the son of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Cassidy) Rice, was born in Walpole, N.H., and grew up in Westminster, Vt.

He was a graduate of St. Michaels College, Winooski, Vt., attended University of South Carolina, and earned a masters degree from the State University, Plattsburgh. Philips 32 year teaching career included time at Enosburgh Falls, Vt., Moriah Central School, and Saranac Central from which he retired in 1996. He also taught at the Chateauguay Correctional Facility during several summers. At Saranac he led the Saranac Teachers Association and was known for his efforts with the History Bowl, Citizenship Bee, and starting student involvement with the Model UN. Philip also enjoyed his time spent as an adjunct professor guiding student teachers at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Philip served on the Clinton County Planning Board, Office of the Aging board, Rural Preservation Council, was a Saranac Town Councilman for four terms, taught religion at St. James Church where he was the church organist, co-chaired the Battle of Plattsburgh parade committee, and enjoyed many evenings spent accompanying other musicians and friends at the local fiddler groups. Philip was very active in the Saranac Democrat party and a member of the Knight of Columbus, Council # 6067, Morrisonville, NY.

On July 27, 1974 he married Elaine Davey at Immaculate Conception church in Keeseville.

He is survived by three children, Christopher Graeter, Davey Rice, and Marcia (Rice) Newcombe, as well as six grandchildren Alex, Nick, Elizabeth, Richard, Zachary, and Madeline. He is also survived by two brothers, Robert Rice and Howard Rice, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Among those who predeceased him are his parents, a sister, Terri Lowe, and a niece Christine (Rice) Soule.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday Jan. 8, 2013 at the Brown Funeral Home, Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday Jan. 9, 2012 at St. James Church, Cadyville. Interment will be in the family plot in St. James Cemetery, Cadyville.

Donations in Philips memory may be made to Hospice of the North Country, Saranac Fire Department, or for masses.
