Bernard Anthony "Sonny" Tavernia

MORRISONVILLE — Bernard Anthony "Bernie" Tavernia, 66, of Rt. 22B died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 in Gainesville, Fla.

He was born in Malone on Jan. 30, 1946, the son of Bernard R. and Florence (Rouselle) Tavernia. Bernie graduated from Franklin Academy in 1964 and attended Canton ATC. He was in the Army Reserves. Bernie was a communicant of St. Alexander's Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 6067.

On Sept. 9, 1967, he was united in marriage to Sandra J. Sherman at St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville.

Bernie was an avid Yankees fan. He enjoyed watching his son and the Mudhens play baseball for many years. Most recently, he enjoyed attending his grandkid's sporting events and activities. His grandkid's were his pride and joy. He will now be their guardian angel.

Bernie was employed for many years managing in retail at Neisners, M.H. Fishman Co., Fay's Drugs, Sherwin Williams and Kriff's Furniture. He was a Correction Officer the last 23 years at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, retiring Nov. 29th 2012. Bernie also enjoyed helping out his son at Frechette's Grocery the past 6 years.

Survivors include his loving wife and best friend of 45 years, Sandra of Morrisonville; a son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Polly Tavernia of Peru; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn M. and David Trombly of Chazy; 4 grandchildren, Justin and Nathan Trombly of Chazy, Sarah and Michael Tavernia of Peru; a brother, Kenneth Tavernia of Saratoga Springs; 2 sisters and a brother-in-law, Brenda and Daniel Fleury of Constable, Deborah Foote of Massena; a sister-in-law, Susan Tavernia of Malone; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; an "adopted brother" Mike Settevendemio; his dog Samantha and many special friends.

Bernie was predeceased by his parents, Bernard R. Tavernia Feb. 11, 1988 and Florence M. Tavernia March 4, 2000; his in-laws, Raymond Sherman March 3, 1969 and Margaret E. (LaDue) Sherman Sept. 20, 1991; a brother-in-law, R. Palmer Foote June 29, 2009.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Alexander's Church in Morrisonville. Burial will be at a later date in the parish cemetery.
