Shirley Ann George

AU SABLE FORKS — Shirley Ann George, 77, passed away suddenly on Dec. 30, 2012 at her home on Hill Street in Keeseville N.Y.

Shirley was born on August 21, 1935 in Piarmont N.H., the daughter of Harold and Willamine (Sawyer) Hood. She was one of six children.

She graduated from Haverhill Academy in Haverhill, N.H. She worked as a waitress in both N.H. and Vt., before moving to Au Sable Forks in 1962 where she stayed with her cousins Tink and Gladys Emerson. She worked as a waitress at Tirolerland, in Jay N.Y. for over 10 years. She married James George June 4, 1972.

Shirley was an active member of the Holy Name St. Matthews parish council for many years, the Catholic Daughters and the American Legion Auxillary Post 504. Shirley loved to read, do puzzles, crochet, quilting, embroidery, enjoyed playing cards and bowling. She was a member of the Indole Golf Club and is now Au Sable Valley Golf Club. She was an excellent putter and shot a hole in one during her 40 plus years of playing golf.

Shirley is survived by one sister, Barbara Hood Sprague of Lyme, N.H.; and one brother, Donald Hood and his wife Susan of Bradford, Vt.; several beloved nieces and nephews and several good friends.

Shirley is predeceased by her parents and her husband James George; one brother, Harold; and two sisters, Louise and Doris.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 P.M. on Thursday, January 3, at the Thwaits-Zaumetzer Funeral Home in Au Sable Forks, N.Y. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, Jan. 4, at the Holy Name Church. Burial will follow in the parish Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Holy Name School or to the Au Sable Forks Library. The Thwaits- Zaumetzer Funeral Home is care of arrangements.

    HERKIMER — Russell A. LaFontaine, 91, of Herkimer and formerly of Champlain, N.Y., passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 15, 2013, in the Folts Home, Inc., Herkimer, with his family by his side. He was born Dec. 22, 1921, in Champlain, the son of the late Emmett and Elsie (Allard) LaFontaine and was educated in Champlain schools. Russell served in the United States Army during World War II. He married the former Leona Dupee. Mrs. LaFontaine passed away in 1989.
