Marion H. Brewster

PLATTSBURGH — Marion H. Brewster (nee Mero), age 94, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012 at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh.

Born and raised in Rouses Point, she attended the village high school. Following graduation, she entered Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. After completing her training, she worked as a registered nurse at Mt. Sinai and clinics in New York City. She volunteered for theU.S. Army Nurse Corps, and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in Sept. 1941. Initially stationed at Ft. Dix, she later served in the Pacific theatre, working at a temporary Army hospital on the Island of Oahu, and the station hospital at Waikapu on the Island of Maui. When the war ended, she was honorably discharged with the rank of 1st Lt. Returning to Rouses Point, she married Wayne Brewster a war veteran and life long resident of Plattsburgh and they settled on South Acres Road. In the post war years Marion work as an industrial nurse at the present-day Georgia-Pacific Paper Mill and later at both Physicians Hospital and Champlain Valley Hospital in pediatrics and as a recovery room nurse until her retirement from CVPH.

In her teen years Marion studied dance with Evelyn Erving and performed in Erving Dance Revue and with the Rouses Point Coeds in the North Country and southern Quebec. She was also known for her athleticism in high school. A strong swimmer, she was remembered for swimming to Alburg, Vt. on occasion accompanied by her cousin Louise. Marion loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping and canoeing with her family. Marion was an avid reader, she especially loved historical novels and mysteries set in the North Country. An accomplished seamstress, gardener, cook, and baker, Marion was also adept at home canning and making preserves, She willingly shared her skills and regional and traditional recipes with others. A long time member of Our Lady of Victory Church, she was a member of the Catholic Daughters for many years.

She is survived by a son, Alan Brewster of Plattsburgh; a daughter, Dr. Linda Brewster and son-in-law Dr. Robert Brady of Reading, Mich.; a granddaughter, Whitney Brewster of Elmira, N.Y.; a grandson, Kortney Brewster, currently of Mons, Belgium; three step-grandchildren, Eileen Beach of West Lake, Ohio, Dr. Brenda Brady of Perrysburg, Ohio, Patrick Brady of Toledo, Ohio; and three nieces and five nephews.

Marion was preceded in death by her husband of 6l years, Wayne; her parents, Harry and Helene Mero; and brothers, John and Harold.

Marion will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. Marion exhibited a caring and nurturing spirit throughout her life, and exemplified the attributes of pioneering women.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012 at Our Lady of Victory Church, Plattsburgh, with interment to follow at St Peter's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
