PLATTSBURGH — Tarley Jill Keith died in her home in Plattsburgh on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, with her family and Hospice by her side.
Tarley was born in Plattsburgh in 1939. She was the daughter of Newton and Marion Keith. She attended Peru High School and graduated from Green Mountain College.
After college, she spent several years living and working in Boston, working in the field of dietetics. Hospitality was a significant and enduring thread in Tarley's life. Her parents owned and operated the Royal Savage Inn. Upon returning to Plattsburgh, she became owner of Valcour Lodge with her late husband, Harold Lieberthal. Between the years 1965 and 1995, Tarley and Harold ran a full-service dining/boating/vacationing destination with 15 housekeeping cottages with her family.
Enduring friendships resulted from her time at The Lodge.
Tarley had a tremendous appetite for life. She enjoyed downhill skiing, swimming in Lake Champlain, reading and spending time outdoors. In addition to her love of her children and grandchildren, Tarley served on the Council on the Arts and fulfilled several leadership positions for the Elks Lodge, including her tenure as chaplain, making her the second woman elected to the position in the history of the organization. She was a docent for many years in addition to being an avid volunteer. She was a long-time member of Peru Community Church. Her last career was a Customer Service representative for N.Y. State Workers' Compensation Board. Tarley is survived by her daughter, Sarah Lieberthal McGee of Plattsburgh; her daughter and son-in-law, Amy Lieberthal and Mathew Fouts of Brookline, Mass.; Jerry McGee of Port Kent; her grandchildren, Joshua Hicks, Alana Parsons, Tatum Jill Fouts; and her great-granddaughter, Jaidin Hicks. Tarley is also survived by her sister, Tomma Sargent of Vero Beach, Fla., Tanny and William Ladue of Orlando, Fla.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh. Members of Elks Lodge 621 are asked to meet at 6:45 p.m., at the Funeral Home for services. Funeral services will follow at 7 p.m. from the Brown Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Kathleen Crighton officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Behavioral Health Services North and to Hospice of the North Country. Special thanks to Corky Lindburg, all friends for volunteering during her illness (you know who you are), Hospice of the North Country, Tuffs Medical Center, Hebrew Rehab Center and CVPH R5.
Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St., Plattsburgh, N.Y.; 561-3980.
