Miners short-circuit Expos' power surge

PLATTSBURGH — The Meron's Expos rapped out 11 home runs at homer-friendly South Acres Field Sunday afternoon.

In the end, however, it didn't matter a whole lot as the unbeaten Lyon Mountain Miners pounded out a 12-10 and 21-14 doubleheader sweep in Champlain Valley Baseball League action.

The Expos held a 10-3 advantage at one time in the opener. But, the Miners tied it with seven runs in the sixth inning and won it in the top of the seventh on Kris Chase's two-run homer.

Kris Chase finished with a home run and two doubles, while Jerry Kowalowski also had three hits, including a homer. Scott Baker added a home run and single, while Jamie Juntunen and Justin Besaw each had two hits for the Miners.

Matt Dahlin paced the Expos with two singles and a home run, while Andy Gooch added a home run and triple, and Jared Jarvis a home run.

In Game 2, Reilly Lawless and Juntunen powered Lyon Mountain (10-0) with four hits apiece, with Juntunen getting a home run. Kris Chase and Besaw each rapped out three hits and Dave Waldron had two.

Besaw was the winning pitcher in relief in both games.

Dahlin finished with three home runs and five RBI for the Expos who back-to-back-to-back-to back home runs in the first inning.

Jarvis added two homers and a single, while Mark Passino homered and doubled. Gooch and Kyle Kelly chipped in with home runs, giving the Expos (4-6) eight for the game.

PLATTSBURGH — The second-place Plattsburgh Cardinals (8-2) held on for a win in the second game to avoid dropping two to the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx (4-6).

In the opener, Aaron Goldfarb led the Timberjaxx with three hits, while D.J. Barber and Jimmy Knight added two hits apiece, with Barber driving in two runs.

Winning pitcher Andrew Price pitched into the seventh inning and Knight took over with runners on first and second and nobody out. Knight recorded the save by inducing a double play and grounder to second.

Tory Bouyea, Adam Porter, Nate Durkee and Zeke Perras led the Cardinals with two hits apiece, with Bouyea driving in two runs.

In Game 2, Steve Burris went the distance for the win as he struck out eight walked three and surrendered six hits. The Cardinals held a 4-1 lead after five and held on.

Bouyea and Alex LaFountain rapped doubles in the Cardinals' five-hit offensive attack.

Josh Chapman paced the Timberjaxx with two hits, while Barber chipped in with a a double and Knight a RBI single.

SARANAC — Frank Brogna and Jordan Keysor combined to allow just six hits in two games as the Airborne Speedway Padres (2-8) picked up their first two wins of the season.

In Game 1, Brogna struck out eight, walked three and allowed four hits in going the route. Keysor was even better in Game 2 as he fanned 16, did not walk anyone and surrendered two hits.

In Game 1, Matt Rivers led the Padres with a single, double and triple, while Jeff Norton and Cory Trombley each added a double and single. Eric Bell drove in two runs.

The Padres erased a 2-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

In Game 2, Norton finished with two singles, a double and three RBI, while Keysor chipped in with a two-run double, and Mark Eggleston and Bell two-run singles.

Four Fourth Ward A's players had a hit each in the opener, with Brett Gilman driving in both runs.

Mike Howard's fourth-inning single and Steve Livsey's seventh-inning single were the lone hits in the second game for the A's (2-8).
