ALTONA — Alvin Anthony Canning Sr., 89, of Altona passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.He was born June 17, 1923, in Saranac, N.Y., the son of Wilbur and Winifred (Taylor) Canning. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, seeing action in the Pacific Theater.
He was predeceased by his parents, Wilbur and Winifred (Taylor) Canning; his wife, Loretta Mae Stevenson, whom he married May 6, 1950. She passed away in 1981. Two brothers, Harold Canning and Michael Canning; and two sisters, Hilda Davies and Nora Patnode also preceded him in death.
Survivors include; four sons, Alvin Canning Jr., and his wife Sally of Chazy Lake, Carlton Canning of Lyon Mountain, Gary Canning and his wife, Beverly of Altona, Paul Canning of Lake Placid; seven grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Kristen, Kyle, Ashley, Adam, Marnie and David. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and his companion of 28 years, Maris Lodge.
A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20 at St. Bernard's Church in Lyon Mountain. Buriel will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
