Don’t state as a fact something that is unsubstantiated or that our editors wouldn't know to be true.

Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

We monitor comments Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Approval of comments outside these times may be delayed.

Sheep pasture management seminar offered

WESTPORT — At 6:30 p.m. on Friday, the Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District will sponsor a seminar on Managing Sheep and Goat Pastures for Improved Herd Health while Boosting Pasture Productivity.

The talk will be held at the Essex County Fairgrounds, CCE building. The guest speaker will be Dave Roberts, a state grazing lands specialist.

All are welcome. RSVP to Tiffany Pinheiro, conservation technician, at 962-8225. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Extension to offer pre-season market training

MALONE — Marketing what they grow, raise and make directly to consumers is an area that Northern New York farmers say they need to know more about, whether they are trying to sell cheese, yogurt, vegetables, flowers, meat products or other value-added agriculture products.

To meet that interest, the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Associations of Northern New York will offer pre-farmers’ market season training.

Organizer and Northern New York Regional and Local Foods Specialist Bernadette Logozar said that educating farmers in the region about direct marketing creates opportunity for those individual farm businesses to profit and to potentially create jobs through expanding their production, processing and retailing capacity.

Workshops are set for:

Canton: Saturday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., CCE St. Lawrence Learning Farm. Topics include food safety at direct-market venues, including farmers’ markets farmstands, CSAs and by direct delivery; plus Going Mobile: Using Smart Phones to Accept Credit Cards. A price of $15 includes lunch and materials. Register with CCE St. Lawrence County, 315-379-9192.

Malone: Saturday, March 30, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., 911 Building. Topics include Insurance for Direct Marketers, Going Mobile: Using Smart Phones to Accept Credit Cards, and Social Media Options for Promoting Your Farm Business. A cost of $15 includes lunch and materials. Register with CCE Franklin County, 483-7403.

Logozar said that helping Northern New York farmers and processors tap into consumer markets in the region supports a localized food economy that offers marketplace shoppers diverse product choices and benefits the local community.
