PLATTSBURGH — The shelves are nearly bare at the Gap Outlet in Champlain Centre mall.
Past the “70 percent off” posters in the window sits a sign announcing the closure and apologizing for the inconvenience.
Local Gap management cannot comment on the closure or say what day the store will actually shut its doors.
All questions regarding the store must be funneled through the Gap corporation in San Francisco, but those offices were closed this afternoon.
It’s estimated that about 20 people will lose their jobs.
The original Gap store opened in Champlain Centre in 1988. Then in 2006, the Gap store shut down and was soon after replaced with the Gap Outlet, which offers Gap merchandise for cheaper prices.
Gap, Inc. operates more than 3,100 stores under four apparel lines — Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy and Piperlime.
When the Plattsburgh store closes, the nearest Gap stores will be in Lake Placid or Burlington.
Champlain Centre mall management was not available today to say if a store is lined up to take over the space.
KB Toys store in Champlain Centre is also having a going-out-of-business sale due to the bankruptcy filing of its parent company.
