In July of 1909, 750 soldiers from the U.S. Army 10th Cavalry Unit of the Buffalo Soldiers marched into Vermont for their assignment at Fort Ethan Allen, Colchester, Vt. When not in battle, they built forts and roads, installed telegraph lines, escorted wagon trains, surveyed roads and protected settlers.
