This cement manhole, which often has water pouring down its sides from above-ground level indicating its attachment to underground pipes, is located on the sand beach in the cove just west of Ram's Head. It may have been part of a sewage-effluent outflow in the days when sewage-disposal rules were far more lax. While it seems odd that effluent from a large subdivision would be dumped so near a swimmable beach, it may have been the only place the outflow could go due to cliffs and ledge. Or, it could have been a shallow well trying to avoid sulfur water.
