Following the devastating fire of December 1970 that destroyed the Howard Place block, a second fire finished off the corner when adjoining Main Street Victorian brick buildings also burned. The one-story building that occupies this village lot today houses the Press-Republican's Malone office, Ray's Barber Shop, a dentist's office and other businesses. Since the 1800s, at least four fires completely destroyed buildings on this same site.
