PLATTSBURGH — McSweeney’s, which already has won the Plattsburgh Little League championship, moved one step closer to adding the Babe Ruth title Monday night with a 9-4 victory over Kiwanis.
The win gives McSweeney’s a two-game sweep of the Plattsburgh Babe Ruth League semifinal series and a berth in the best-of-three championship series. McSweeney’s will take on City Fire Department, which defeated City Police, 8-6, Monday to also sweep its semifinal set.
The championship series will get under way at 6 p.m. today at Lefty Wilson Field with Game 2 scheduled for Thursday, same place, same time. A third game, if necessary, will be played next Monday.
C.J. Worley rapped out four singles, Ethan Waite chipped in with a double and a single, and Brett Palmer contributed two base hits to lead McSweeney’s to victory. Ryan Bishop, Adam Seymour and Brendan Cortright also had singles in support of winning pitcher Will Flynn.
Ryan Barcomb belted a double for Kiwanis while losing pitcher Alex LaFountain, Liam McDonough and Joe Courson all had singles.
Jared Murphy slugged a two-run homer and Tom Curran ripped two triples to lead City Fire Department to its series-clinching victory. Anthony Porcelli added a pair of singles while Gus Rietsema, Joe Kirkpatrick and Russell Merrill all had base hits. A.J. Gordon was the winning pitcher.
David Latulipe collected two doubles and a single and Brian Latulipe had a double and two singles to lead City Police. Kevin Niederer and losing pitcher Brett Gilman also had base hits.
