PLATTSBURGH — The top four seeds in the Champlain Valley Baseball League playoffs are through to the semifinals.
The top-seeded Lyon Mountain Miners had a bye last Sunday in the quarterfinals, while the second-seeded Plattsburgh Cardinals recorded a 9-0 victory over the Fourth Ward Athletics, the third-seeded C.R. Tunes Mudhens a 10-1 win over the Loreman’s/Ormsby’s Royals, and the fourth-seeded Hockey Plus Padres a 4-3 decision in 10 innings over the Adirondack Timberjaxx.
The best-of-three semifinal series begin today in Saranac and Lyon Mountain.
The Mudhens play host to the rival and defending playoff champion Cardinals at noon in Saranac, while the regular season champion Miners entertain Hockey Plus at noon at the Big Ball Diamond. Both games today are nine innings in regulation length.
Games two and three, if necessary, between the Cardinals and Mudhens will take place next Sunday at Lefty Wilson Field.
The Hockey Plus vs. Lyon Mountain game today was switched from Saranac to Lyon Mountain. Games two and three, if necessary, will be played next Sunday in Saranac, with Hockey Plus being the home team.
Tom Neale, who pitched the first six innings, Gary Duquette and Gus Terry combined on a one-hitter last Sunday in the Cardinals’ shutout of the Athletics. Jason Perry and Rob Malloy led Plattsburgh’s offense with three hits each.
Meanwhile, Matt Rivers rapped out four hits and Donny Coolidge three as the Mudhens defeated the Royals. Billy Davis went the distance for the pitching win.
The best game of the day was Hockey Plus’ entra-inning victory over the Timberjaxx and Jeremiah St. Louis, who went the route in taking the loss.
Craig Bujold, who pitched the first eight innings, and Mike Bergman, who went the final two for the win, combined for 12 strikeouts. Bergman, Mike Siskavich and Mark Passino led Hockey Plus at the plate with two hits, with Bergman homering.

Siskavich singled in the tying run in the bottom of the sixth and doubled in the game-winning run in the 10th as Hockey Plus edged the Timberjaxx.

Davis struck out nine, walked one and allowed four hits in going the nine innings in the Mudhens’ win over Loreman’s/Ormsby’s. Davis lost his shutout bid in the last inning.
