SOUTH PLATTSBURGH — George Foley of Saranac Lake dove to the low side and passed Matt Woodruff for the lead exiting turn four with two laps to go and went on to win the Durocher Auto Modified main event Saturday at Airborne Speedway.
Mike Bruno followed Foley through to gain the runner-up spot. Woodruff, who had led from lap 12, settled for third.
Woodruff, Foley and Bruno had been racing nose to tail when they came upon a backmarker on lap 28. Woodruff elected to swing outside and Foley and Bruno chose a more direct path to paydirt.
“Matt had to make a choice in the lapped traffic and it worked out for me,” Foley said. “If I didn’t go the bottom Mike would have.”
“We made wholesale changes to the car and it almost worked out,” a disappointed Woodruff said. “I wanted to keep George pinned down there but he got through.” Leon Gonyo overcame an early spinout to finish fourth. Patrick Dupree was a car-length further back in fifth. Foley, Dupree and Andy Kane won the Modified heats.
After two early yellows shuffled the field, Joey Roberts passed Jim Bushey and led the J&S; Steel Sportsman feature until Jason Bonnett of St Albans caught him on lap 15. Bonnett then drew away to his third win. Jamy Begor was the runner-up, followed by Toby Ebersole, Bran Criss and Roberts. Robin Wood, Ben Hough and Bucko Branham won the Sportsman heats.
Chris Frennier of West Chazy went wire-to-wire to win the Versatile Trailer Sales Renegade feature. Brian Rogers came far from back to finish second at Frennier’s bumper.
Dave Rabtoy and Sherri Meunier improved to third and fourth when Ed Doner weighed in too light in post-race inspection.
Tech inspection altered the official Monster Energy Bomber finish. Brock Begore of Ellenburg Depot was awarded the win. Malcolm Woodward and Bill Doner placed second and third.
Rick Doner of Ausable Forks won the US Army Warrior after swapping the lead twice with runner-up Billy Jenkins of St Albans in the final two laps. Shane Bombard, Justin Doner and Tom Santillo unofficially completed the top five.
