SIMSBURY, CT. — The Champlain Valley Elite Junior A Developmental Team dropped a 5-2 decision to the host Northern Connecticut Wings Premiere in Sunday’s championship game in the Hartford Junior A Hockey Tournament.
“The Wings Premiere is the equivalent to our Junior A team,” said Elite general manager/head coach Justin Frechette. “I’m proud of our team — the score was not indicative of the type of game it was.
“They’re an older team and have a few more guns than we do. We ran out of gas.”
It started out well for the Elite A Developmental Team when Landon Lavictoire scored 10 minutes into the contest, with the assist on the play going to Kevin O’Connell.
“We got off to a good start and it was a 1-1 game after the first period and a 2-1 game in their favor after the second period,” Frechette said.
“But, we didn’t finish on some chances we had and they scored five unanswered goals, with three of them coming in the third period. We had trouble staying with them in the third.”
Eddie Slade tallied the second goal for the Elite, with Justin Houle assisting.
Patrick Bilan was in net for Champlain Valley.
“Bilan played very well and had three or four good saves early on for us,” Frechette said.
The Elite finished the tournament with a 2-1-1 record.
“I never like to see us lose, but it was a long weekend and we learned a lot,” Frechette said. “We showed growth.
“The Wings will be coming to our tournament, the Warren Tire Shootout, on July 18-20, and we’ll get another shot at playing them.”
