BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Brockway Mechanical Senior Babe Ruth team came up short in a couple of one-run games on Saturday.
Brockway Mechanical, missing several of its older players due to graduation, dropped a 9-8 decision to the Granville American Legion and then a 10-9 setback to the Champlain Edge.
Brockway Mechanical, against Granville, scored a run in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead and was one out away from a win when Granville pushed across two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Richard Chase, Mark Eggleston and Kyle Rascoe led Brockway Mechanical with two hits each, while Cody Wood tripled. Cory Trombley, Steve Mills and Josh Chapman also had hits.
Andrew McDonald, in the longest pitching outing of his career, went the distance in taking the setback.
Then, against the Edge, Brockway Mechanical trailed 8-1 before rallying for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score.
Champlain regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth and Brockway Mechanical came back with a run in the seventh to tie it once again.
The Edge, however, won it with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Eggleston paced Brockway Mechanical (3-6 overall) with a double and triple, while Matt Drollette and Chase added two hits each, with one of Drollette’s hits a double.
Trombley, Wood and Mills all rapped doubles in a losing cause.
Starter Rascoe pitched into the third inning and Drollette went the rest of the way in taking the loss.
“Matt Drollette and Kyle Rascoe made their first trips with us and were both pleasant surprises,” said Brockway Mechanical head coach Randy Lozier.
“Cody Wood made a diving catch in center to keep the second game close and Mark Eggleston had a couple of big hits for us in his return to the team.
“We’ve lost the last three games by one-run margins and hopefully we can get a couple of wins against Middlebury.”
Brockway Mechanical is at the Middlebury Senior Babe Ruth team today.
