PLATTSBURGH — The Champlain Valley Baseball League will hold its Annual Woodmen of the World “Take Me Out to the Ballgame Day” today at the ball diamond in Lyon Mountain.
Six of the seven teams in the league will be in action — featuring three seven-inning contests.
The schedule includes: C.R. Tunes Mudhens (8-4) vs. Hockey Plus (6-6) at 11 a.m.; the first-place Lyon Mountain Miners (11-1) vs. the second-place Plattsburgh Cardinals (10-2) at 1:30 p.m.; and the Adirondack Timberjaxx (2-8) vs. the Loreman’s/Ormsby’s Royals (2-10) at 4 p.m.
The Fourth Ward Athletics will be the lone team not in action today, but will make it up by playing two games the following weekend.
Each team plays a 14-game regular season schedule and the Miners can wrap up the regular season championship today with a victory over the Cardinals.
Lyon Mountain maintained first place by sweeping the third-place C.R. Tunes Mudhens last weekend, while the Cardinals took two from the Timberjaxx to stay one game off the pace.
Leading the Cardinals in hitting are Matt Duquette (20-39, .513), Brandon Barcomb (7-14, .500), Rob Malloy (6-14, .429), Dave Betrus (6-14, .429) and Tom Neale (12-29, .414).
Neale is 3-1 on the hill with a 1.68 ERA and Gary Duquette 4-1, including one save, with a 2.03 ERA.
Plattsburgh, however, will be without the services of standout shortstop Adam Porter for the remainder of the season. Porter, last year’s playoff Most Valuable Player, was hit by a line drive while pitching batting practice to the Ticonderoga American Legion team.
Porter suffered a concussion and is out for the season due to precautionary reasons. The league and its players wish for Porter’s full and speedy recovery.
It should also be noted that there has been a change in the standings, which could have an effect on the playoff picture.
Loreman’s/Ormsby’s come-from-behind win over the Timberjaxx in the second game of a doubleheader two Sundays ago has been taken away due to Loreman’s/Ormsby’s use of an ineligible player in the game.
As a result, the Timberjaxx (2-8) have moved ahead of Loreman’s/Ormsby’s (2-10) in the standings, making today’s game between the two even more important in the standings.
Pitcher of the Week: Tom Neale, Plattsburgh Cardinals.
Neale went the distance with a three-hitter to outduel Jeremiah St. Louis as the Cardinals recorded a 6-1 win over the Timberjaxx in the first game of their twinbill at Lefty Wilson Field. Neale finished with nine strikeouts and walked three.
Player of the Week: Kyle Rock, Hockey Plus
Rock, with Hockey Plus short on players, batted his opposite hand (left) to protect an injured shoulder and had four hits on the day, including three-for-three, with a triple, in the first game as Hockey Plus took two from the Fourth Ward Athletics.
