ROUSES POINT — Kastle Birch's third period goal proved to be the game-winner as Northeastern Clinton knocked off Plattsburgh, 2-1, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys' hockey Wednesday.
The Cougars (8-7, 4-3) took a 1-0 lead after the second period on Matt Letourneau's unassisted goal at 9:32.
"It was just a great individual effort by Matt," Northeastern Clinton coach Rob Francis said. "He made a nice move to get past the defenseman and went top shelf for the goal."
The Cougars wasted no time in the third period when Birch gave them a two-goal lead at the 1:03 mark. Dylan Bombardier and Liam McDonough collected the assists.
"Birch came around to the top and let one go," Francis said. "It was sort of a screen shot."
Northeastern Clinton would need the goal as George Williams found the back of the net at the 9:38 mark to bring the Hornets (3-10, 2-6) back to within one. Brandon Matott added the assist.
Kyle McCarthy turned away 19 shots in net to capture the victory for the Cougars.
"This was a big league win for us," Francis said. "I thought Letourneau and McCarthy each played good games."
"Northeastern Clinton played good team defense and Letourneau is a special player for them," Plattsburgh coach Jamie Reidy said.
Rob Knowles made 23 saves in goal for Plattsburgh.
"I didn't think we played well in the first period, but I felt we did after that," Reidy said. "It was a good match-up between the two teams."
