BEEKMANTOWN — Children can delve into colonial times with the Summer Reading Camp sponsored by the Beekmantown Youth Commission.
The camp, for kids in kindergarten through grade five, runs from 9 to 11:30 a.m. July 16 through 20.
In addition to reading and writing, kids will participate in activities such as cooking on a wood stove, rope making, candle making, quill writing and crafts.
“The program has been going on for the last 10 years,” said Sanford Coakley, commission director. “When we initiated the reading program, we wanted to come up with nontraditional ways kids could find an interest in reading.”
This summer’s camp has a colonial theme. Past themes have included transportation and Greece.
Children will visit Country Dreams Farm off the Pellerin Road.
“They surround a horse-petting zoo with exotic animals and have wagon rides that are horse drawn,” Coakley said.
The Youth Commission offers 13 different camps to children including arts and crafts, kayaking, football, volleyball, street hockey, tennis, golf and gymnastics.
A new cheerleading camp was also offered this year.
“We start the last week of June and run through the first week of August,” Coakley said. “We also do a swim program with the YMCA.”
Admission to the Reading Camp, which will be held at Beekmantown Elementary School’s all purpose room, is free for Beekmantown residents or $36 for non-residents. For questions or to register, call 563-4650.
