BOP Essay Contest winners announced
PLATTSBURGH — An award ceremony for the 2011 Battle of Plattsburgh Essay Contest winners will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Battle of Plattsburgh Association, 31 Washington Road.
Winners in grades four and five are Liam Saward, first place; Jace Filion, second; and Shayna Filion, third. Sixth- through eighth-grade winners are Emma Spronk, first place; Anthony Martinez, second; and Kallysta Rabatoy and Danya Burl tied for third place. Winners in grades nine through 12 are Pascal Spronk, first place, and William Bradley, second.
Cash prizes will be awarded from KeyBank, with $200 for students who placed first, $100 for second-place winners and $50 for third-place winners.
Benefit planned to cover cancer expenses
LYON MOUNTAIN — A benefit is planned to help cover Vicki Tolosky's cancer treatment and medical expenses starting at noon Sunday at the American Legion Post 1623.
Events include a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, DVD surround-sound raffle and lottery tree raffle. Lunches will also be available and include michigans, baked beans, macaroni salad and coleslaw. Donations will also be gladly accepted.
Learn to fly kites at youth workshop
KEENE VALLEY — Keene Central School is hosting a youth indoor kite-flying workshop from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at 33 Market St.
All area youth are invited to come watch demonstrations by Seaside Kites of Hull, Mass., and other members of the American Kitefliers Association. The free workshop, which is sponsored by East Branch Friends of the Arts and the Keene Central School Mentoring Program, will give participants the opportunity build, decorate and then fly their own indoor kites. Refreshments will also be available for sale.

Child-safety seat clinic planned
WILMINGTON — A child-safety seat clinic is being held from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilmington Fire Station on Hazelton Road.
Adults who are responsible for providing transportation for children of all ages are encouraged to attend. Technicians will be on hand to inspect seats, assist with installations, provide information and answer questions regarding child-seat safety.
The event is sponsored by New York State Police Troop B, Adirondack Medical Center, North Country Home Services and Wilmington Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Breakfast to benefit Youth Center
LAKE PLACID — The Shipman Youth Center of Lake Placid will be holding their annual breakfast from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the center.
The all-you-can-eat meal includes pancakes, sausages, coffee, juice and Adirondack syrup that was tapped and collected by Shipman Youth Center students and staff. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children 3 to 10 years of age and children 2 and under eat for free. All proceeds benefit the center.
CCCC sponsoring events for area children this week
PLATTSBURGH — The Child Care Coordinating Council of the North Country will be sponsoring several events this week as part of its Month of the Young Child.

Touch A Truck event next Saturday
LAKE PLACID — The 3rd-annual Touch A Truck event, which offers children the opportunity to explore all types of vehicles, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 21 at the Lake Placid Show Grounds on Route 73.
The event, presented by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Placid in partnership with the Lake Placid After School Program, costs $5 for adults and $3 for children, and will be held rain or shine. Food, a raffle, an entry gift, bands, demos and more will also be offered.

Great Escape tickets on sale
PLATTSBURGH — The Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department is selling tickets to the Great Escape for anyone 48 inches or taller for $30.
The tickets are good for any day the Great Escape is open and normally are $45.99 if purchased at the gate. Tickets for anyone shorter than 48 inches are $34.99 at the gate; no discounts are available on these tickets. Children ages 2 years and under are admitted free.
Opening day for the Great Escape is May 21. Tickets can be purchased from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at the Town Clerk's Office, 151 Banker Road. To learn more, call the Town Recreation Office at 562-6860.
Family Fun Day planned at park
PLATTSBURGH — Friends of Point au Roche State Park will be holding Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 21 at the park on Camp Red Cloud Road.
Participants will make and take home a bucket garden with master gardeners, enjoy smoothies, read books under the tree and learn about bugs, beavers and ponds. It will also include a trail and shoreline clean-up day starting at 9 a.m. at the Nature Center.

Save energy through state program
SARANAC LAKE — Many Village of Saranac Lake residents and renters may be eligible for no-cost energy efficiency improvements through an existing New York State Energy Efficiency Program.
Any homeowner or renter with income below 60 percent of the state median income is eligible to enroll in the program. Rental properties with income-qualified tenants are also eligible. The focus of the program is on cost-effective electric reduction measures, particularly lighting and refrigerator replacements, as well as other cost-effective home-performance strategies such as insulation, air sealing and health and safety measures. On-site energy use education provides customers with additional strategies for managing their energy costs.
To qualify, gross monthly income for a one-person household must be no more than $2,129; $2,784 for two; $3,439 for three; $4,094 for four; $4,749 for five, $5,404 for six; $5,527 for seven; $5,650 for eight; and $5,773 for nine family members.

PPS grant to support Writers Contest for kids
PLATTSBURGH — Mountain Lake PBS received $500 dollars from Stewart's Holiday Match program in support of the PBS Kid's Go! Writers Contest, a local competition designed to promote the advancement of children's reading and writing skills through hands-on, active learning.
"The money from Stewart's will help support the Writers Contest so that children, families and the community can encourage students to be writers and illustrators and celebrate the creation of their stories," said Jane Owens, Mountain Lake's director of outreach and education.
Mountain Lake PBS has participated in the Writers Contest for 17 years, in which more than 2,000 stories from students in the region have been collected. This year's winners will be announced in May, and their stories will be posted online at www.mountainlake.org.
