25 YEARS AGO — 1987
▶ Robert Ledger, father of the missing developmentally disabled man Brian Ledger, is now offering a $500 reward for the location and return of his son. Brian Ledger has been missing since the new year, and as of now there are no leads to finding the missing man.
▶ Tupper Lake's upcoming annual ALPO sled dog races are off to a good start, with more than 75 entries in before the end of the second week of the year. The races will be held at the end of the month with an estimated 150 dog sled teams. The course stretches 20 miles over International Paper Co. land.
▶ Yolanda King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., is scheduled to appear and address an audience at Plattsburgh State next month. Her speech is entitled "A Dream Deferred."
▶ Plattsburgh Police are investigating the break-in and burglary at the home of Barbara Davis. An unknown male entered Davis's apartment through a basement window and threatened Davis and her friend,Irma LeClair at knife-point. The unknown man stole their purses, containing an undisclosed amount of money, including checks made out to Davis's business, "Village Hair Design."
50 YEARS AGO — 1962
▶ The president of the Adirondack Park Association reported that eight Northern New York counties have contributed a total of $38,500 towards a 1962 goal of $50,000 for advertising to attract tourists to the area.
▶ Richard V. Payne, 27, of West Plattsburgh, suffered multiple fractures while working in a missile silo in Swanton, Vt. Payne's condition is deemed serious and includes a crushed pelvis. He was working as a mechanic is the employ of General Dynamics, and sustained his injuries when he was wedged between the silo elevator and the silo's metal frame.
▶ Plattsburgh Air Force Base personnel continue their search in the Adirondack Mountains for the four-person crew of a missing B47 jet. "By no means has anyone given up hope of finding survivors," 1st Lt. David Chase said, though he admitted that, as time passes, the crew's chance of survival dims.
▶ Four Plattsburgh artists are having 11 pieces featured at the state capitol building in Albany: Mrs. Samella Lewis, Jack F. Schoof, Mrs. Blanche Caesar and Mrs. Lesta B. Nelson. The works are part of an exhibit sponsored by the State Assembly.
75 YEARS AGO — 1937
▶ Arthur LeClair's stolen automobile was found abandoned at Clinton Mills. Howard Brennan and Lawrence Rogers of Ellenburg were taken into custody and confessed to taking the Ellenburg man's car from the front of an Ellenburg Depot restaurant.
▶ Sister of Mercy Hospital in Gabriels was the scene of a fatal accident that took the life of Edward Farewell, a Gabriels local. Farewell, 47, was working to equalize the pressure of the hospital's boiler when he was struck by a falling 6-inch steam pipe and knocked off his ladder. The coroner was unable to determine whether the pipe or the fall had been the cause of Farewell's death.
▶ The residents of Draper Avenue in Plattsburgh have taken up croquet as a pastime. Resident C. B. Wisell is the proud owner of the finest croquet court in the North Country and has played 200 games so far this year on the court with his neighbors.
100 YEARS AGO — 1912
▶ Kent Falls Superintendent Gifford ordered the pond above the International Paper Company dam lowered after two cracks were found in it. The village of Morrisonville has issued a flood watch due to thawing.
▶ Formerly connected with the optical department of the Walker Sherman Company, N. A. Boyle will open an optical manufacturing plant over Finn's Clothing store on Margaret Street in Plattsburgh.
▶ Seth S. Allen and his brother Benjamin I. Allen have formed a partnership for the practice of law and have set up an office under the firm name of Allen & Allen on Margaret Street in Plattsburgh.
▶ Famous speed skater Edmund Lamy of Saranac Lake his been matched to race Morris Wood, acknowledged professional champion, for the championship of the world. The match, which includes seven different distances ranging from 220 yards to 2 miles, will take place at the end of the month in Saranac Lake.
