25 YEARS AGO — 1987

▶ The New York State Conservation Council is sponsoring a "March on Albany" to urge the Gov. Mario Cuomo and the legislators to give more financial support to fish and wildlife programs. Between 250 and 500 sportsmen from the region are participating.

▶ The State Department of Correctional Services and the Champlain village board have turned down the idea of creating a minimum security prison out of the Harris Bindery Systems plant. The idea was proposed last fall by Champlain Town Supervisor Leo Letourneau when the plant announced its closure.

▶ The Plattsburgh Interfaith Council has formed a task force for preparing political and legal resources for lawyers advising city refugees. The task force will be headed by SUNY Plattsburgh Latin American Studies professor Dr. Stuart Voss and Clinton County District Attorney Joseph Kelley.

▶ Clinton County Legislature Chairman Melvin "Bob" Bruno was handed a $177,000 check from New York State Social Services. The money is to be used for refugee aid. Gov. Mario Cuomo sent Social Service Commissioner Cesar A. Perales to deliver the check, who said "the very least we at state government can do is respond quickly."

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

▶ Plattsburgh's WPTZ-TV is partaking in a $150,000 expansion program. Station General Manager David Milligan said that they are beginning work on a new higher tower on Terry Mountain that will double the station's coverage area.

▶ Plattsburgh State and elementary schools in the city are participating in a new program for college sophomore students majoring in elementary education. The program is being held at the Plattsburgh Air Force Base and involves placing college students in elementary classrooms, where they will assist the teachers and get a taste for the environment.

▶ Plattsburgh State has announced that they will be hosting the first national jewelry-makers show in April. The show is being held to promote the production of hand-made jewelry and to recognize the excellence in its craftsmanship. The gallery will be set up in the Feinberg Library.

▶ Altona and Chazy Central Schools have reopened after closing last week because of a lack of attendance due to illness. A large portion of their students remained home the first day of their reopening, but administration is hoping for better attendance as the week progresses.

75 YEARS AGO — 1937

▶ The construction of the new vehicular bridge in Rouses Point is set to begin shortly, effectively employing 50 people. The bridge is scheduled to be completed and open to traffic the first week of June.

▶ Tupper Lake resident Leon Jessey Faust is currently resting in Mercy General Hospital after a wood-sawing accident in which a power-driven saw nearly severed his left arm.

100 YEARS AGO — 1912

▶ Albany's Dr. John Hurdis will be featured as a soloist in a concert put on at the YMCA.

▶ Heavy snowfall in Mooers Forks has brought business to a standstill, having completely blocked the highways.

▶ Plattsburgh's Mina Terry has returned home from studying corsetry in New York City.

▶ Comedian Neil O'Brian and famous minstrel organization leader Lew Dockstader are booked for an early appearance at the Plattsburgh Theatre.
