25 YEARS AGO — 1987

▶ Admissions to Clinton Community College are up 20 percent this year, making it the highest enrollment number in the college's history.

▶ Weather emergencies wreaked havoc across the North Country, from flooding in Essex County to wind damage in Franklin, knocking out power throughout the region. A Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. spokesperson said that their biggest problem was with power poles on Route 11B, where five poles in a row broke off.

▶ Pendragon Theatre's "Spring Into the Arts Festival" will be wrapping up with an evening of music and magic at The Java Jive Coffee House, featuring guitarist Edward Gerhard and magician/comedian Bo Jest, the Kosmic Konjurer.

▶ Stores ranging from grocery stores to antique shops have all opened their doors in the North Country this year, creating about 40 new jobs in the local market. This number is expected to skyrocket with the opening of the Champlain Centre this summer.

50 YEARS AGO — 1962

▶ Forty-year-old Ottie Hazlett of Plattsburgh was arrested after becoming intoxicated and wandering into the private home of another city resident. Hazlett opted to pay a $50 fine for the action instead of spending 30 days in Clinton County Jail.

▶ Three groups of Westport Central School elementary students — a kindergarten class and two third-grade classes — got an inside look at the making of maple syrup at the Maple Sugar Bush owned by Brigadier and Mrs. Treadwell of Westport.

▶ A group of eight youths have formed a new 4-H club in Peru, currently dubbed the Peru Twisters.

▶ The plane carrying James C. Wemyss — brother of the manager of the Plattsburgh Vanity-Fair Paper Mills — was forced to do an emergency landing after flying out of Plattsburgh and encountering a snowstorm. Reports say that no one was seriously injured and minimal damage was done to the plane.

75 YEARS AGO — 1937

▶ The development of a modern athletic field in Saranac Lake will begin soon, complete with a steel and concrete grandstand seating 3,500.

▶ Clinton County will be receiving $470,000 for road construction this year, which is just a portion of the $2,140,000 being spread throughout northern New York.

▶ Trooper P.A. Downs of Dannemora outpost and prisoner Frank Baker of Lyon Mountain both suffered broken collarbones after the trooper car they were riding in struck a snowbank, throwing the pair onto the highway.

▶ Mr. Alex Gosselin of Rouses Point called the police after discovering an infant's body wrapped in newspaper in his car. The vehicle has been unused since last January and had been stored in his garage. The only clue the police currently have is the date of the newspaper used to cover the body, which assures that the body has been there for less than a week.

100 YEARS AGO — 1912

▶ Mineville resident Silas Lamar is still recovering in the Champlain Valley Hospital after being accidentally shot by his hunting companion last November.

▶ Gov. Dix has signed a bill that states that a bridge will be built across the Ausable River at Bagg's Hill at the state's expense. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Vert.

▶ A number of students at Plattsburgh's Grammar School will be participating in declamation and recitation at a recital being held there.

▶ Champlain resident Chas Jefferson went to Burlington to pick up his wife from Fanny Allen hospital, where she has been for several weeks.
