New works by Gharan Burton

Gharan Burton artist explores diverse themes in new work

PLATTSBURGH — Gharan Burton’s latest work can be viewed in “Artassination Art,” an exhibition at the ROTA Gallery here.

The opening reception is at 5 p.m. Saturday, and the show runs through March 4.

Burton riffed the exhibition’s title off of “I am an Assassin,” an exhibition by his brother, Shadrach, also an artist.

Recent paintings and sculptures will be featured.

“A lot of experimental and abstract work along with figurative and landscape: a bit of everything really,” Burton said. “I work in oil and acrylic. I’m doing some wood carving and wood construction pieces. It will be a full gallery.”

Burton studied in the arts program at SUNY Plattsburgh before finishing his degree at Midwestern State University in Texas.

“At the time, college was getting too expensive for me. I left Plattsburgh State and was out of school two years. I found a cheaper school in Texas,” he said. “What I really liked about the program at Plattsburgh, I got more painting. I became a painter at Plattsburgh State.”

In Texas, he branched out into sculpture.

“The programs are pretty similar. It’s a little more interdisciplinary in Texas. You could focus on other areas.”

He carves mostly by hand with chisels, hammers and some grinding.

“I have a few figurative pieces and a few that is just abstract and constructs pieces,” Burton said. “I have some white oak, ash and some maple. I prefer the white oak. It’s a really hard wood; it polishes really well.”

He most recently showed at the ROTA Gallery in September 2012 with a visiting artist from Botswana.

“Last year, we (Kim LeClaire) had an outdoor exhibition at the Quarry (in Beekmantown),” Burton said.

His work is featured in several galleries in his native Dominica. Last year, he participated in a Caribbean art festival in the British Virgin Islands.

“It was good to see what other artists are doing currently,” Burton said. “It was really good exhibition with artists from different islands than the Virgin Islands. The response was really good.”
