PLATTSBURGH — Frank and Carol Hochreiter wanted a 2013 show at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts, and they got that and "Duet II."
The last-minute exhibition features 70 works — Frank's photographs and Carol's collage, pastel, oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings.
"They asked if we would do a show now," Carol said. "I said, 'Oh.' We agreed we would put this one together quickly. We have 40 new pieces in it. We will do a larger show in the fall of 2013."
In college, Carol was an art major for a year but dropped it.
"My mother wanted me to major in English and find a new boyfriend," she said.
Carol promised herself that when she retired, she would take a watercolor class.
"I did, and that got us going."
The show contains one oil painting.
"I work in whatever medium I'm interested in at the moment. I take classes in different mediums. I have a pastel in the show now. Most of my work is watercolor and acrylics. Watercolor, I think I enjoy it the most. It's versatile. You can work opaque or transparent. Watercolor is really lovely," she said.
A disadvantage is the cost to mat and frame works under glass.
"With acrylics, you can work on canvas and it is not as expensive. You can layer more. I like taking experimental classes. I have one coming up in April," she said.
Frank has always taken photographs. She gently encouraged him to exhibit his work at various venues with her.
"We travel quite extensively," Carol said. "He took photos, and sometimes we frame them. He got a digital camera."
Carol was showing her work at the Hale Walter Gallery in the Plattsburgh Public Library and prodded Frank to exhibit a work or two.
"I think he's enjoying it. He has 38 photos in North Country (Cultural Center for the Arts), a lot which we frantically framed in the last four weeks," Carol said. "It worked out in between our traveling."
