MALONE — At last year’s second-annual “Migrating Passerines” exhibition, the company was good, so was the food and so was the chance to show art, says Madeleine Bialke.
She and her SUNY Plattsburgh peers return to Pouring Light Studios and Gallery in Malone for the third-annual “Migrating Passerines,” which opens with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 16.
The show features 50 to 70 works — paintings, photographs, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and graphic design.
“It’s a good way to get an exhibition on your resume that’s not in the Plattsburgh area,” said Bialke, who is a studio-art major with concentrations in painting and printmaking.
“It’s a good way to get work out in a different community.”
Last year, several of her friends sold sculptures. This year, she’s submitting two paintings, “The Burn Pile” and “The Outhouse.”
The images reference her parents’ Adirondack camp at the Stillwater Reservoir.
She works in oil.
“I like the vibrancy of the color and the nice technique you can get with layering and impasto,” Bialke said.
As president of the Plattsburgh Association of the Visual Arts, a club fostering interaction between art students of different concentrations and non-art majors, Bialke was the point person for Michael Hart, co-founder of Pouring Light.
“The whole thing is broadening their experience outside of the state system,” Hart said. “A lot of their work is committed to parts of their program and other shows. I don’t have a show going on that long, so I don’t tie things up and increase the chance of getting real good work here.”
Students attend with their friends and family in tow.
“It’s just a real thrill for them,” Hart said. “It thrills me, too, and that’s what I’m here for. We invite recent graduates to show right along with the students, and that’s a nice connection to see what they are doing and the ones who are staying in art.”
