Don’t state as a fact something that is unsubstantiated or that our editors wouldn't know to be true.

Don’t presume someone’s guilt in a case when it hasn't been established by a court.

Don’t assail or impugn an identifiable individual or group. If you have that kind of criticism, sign your name and submit it as a Letter to the Editor. (There is some leeway on this in connection with public officials, but it is not unconditional.)

Don’t use profanity. This includes the term “tea bagger.”

Don’t be incendiary or tasteless. Those qualities are subjective, of course, and our editors will be the arbiters.

Do not identify yourself in the main content area of the article content form. Only by enforcing this rule can the moderators prevent unscrupulous commenters from falsely identifying themselves as someone they are not.

Don't type in all caps. It is considered the Internet equivalent of shouting.

In sports articles, do not criticize officiating.

Remember, moderators are not allowed to edit any article comments. If an article comment fails any of the above criteria, the entire comment will be deleted.

We monitor comments Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Approval of comments outside these times may be delayed.

Guglielmo, Kellogg offer free workshops for kids

ESSEX — Local children's book authors will hold free workshops for youngsters in the Community Room of St. John's Episcopal Church in Essex.

On Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., Amy Guglielmo will read to ages 4 to 6 or so and also help participants create art.

Steven Kellogg will conduct a similar workshop for ages 6 to 8 or so from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24.

Space is limited for both workshops, which are supported by the Essex Community Fund.

Festival needs volunteers, vendors

ELIZABETHTOWN — The Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks seeks volunteers and exhibitors for the 22nd-annual Field, Forest and Stream Day, an Adirondack Folk Arts Festival, set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, on the museum grounds of the Adirondack History Center in Elizabethtown.

Also needed for the event are a refrigerator, tents, canopies to cover the stage and other areas, and baked goods.

Invited to participate are those who sell handmade items that tie in with the festival's focus on the harvest, hunt and other traditional North Country work and leisure-time activities. Ten 10-foot-square outdoor antiques booths are available at $60; those double the size are $100. Non-profit rates are $35 and $30 respectively. The cost for other space is $50 under a tent, $40 outside and $60 for food and antiques.

Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for a two-hour stint in exchange for free admission. Most needed are youth helpers to help set up and break down the festival.

Among performers at the festival will be Adirondack storyteller Bill Smith and singer/songwriter Roy Hurd. Returning will be Beth Bidwell's interactive presentation of Adirondack Wild Things. Also offered will be children's activities, contests, food vendors, the Adirondack Farmers Market and many demonstrations.

Auditions set for children's theater

LAKE PLACID — Open auditions for children in grades one through eight have been set for the upcoming Lake Placid Center for the Arts production of "101 Dalmations," directed by Jessica Deeb.

Older and younger children will be considered at the sessions, which will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, and Monday, Aug. 30. Each child should prepare a song ("Happy Birthday" works well) and be dressed for moving and dancing. Enter through the back-door Performer's Entrance.

About two-dozen children will be cast, with rehearsals after school and on weekends.

The show will open on the Center for the Arts stage at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, with other performances at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students under 18.

Fundraising to match grant begins

BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake has been given a $20,000 challenge grant by the John Ben Snow Memorial Trust.

The funds will be used for a major renovation to make the museum's auditorium universally accessible with a covered, ramped wheel-chair entrance from the campus side of the building.

The museum must raise a matching $20,000 by Dec. 15 to receive the grant funding.

"No contribution is too small," a press release said.
