Benefit planned for Champlain Valley Voices

PLATTSBURGH — Champlain Valley Voices, formerly the Champlain Valley Oratorio Society, is celebrating the anniversary of its 30th season.

A Benefit Concert & Silent Auction to raise funds for the season will be held Saturday evening at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts.

The program features Champlain Valley Voices Artistic Director Karen Becker (piano), JoEllen Miano (soprano) and Marilyn Reynolds (violin).

“I’m playing one of the Gershwin piano preludes,” Becker said. “JoEllen is singing a few works, ‘If You’ve Only Got A Mustache’ by Stephen Foster and a French piece by Saint-Saens (called) ‘Le Bonheur est Chose Legere.’ Marilyn is a New York City player who has relocated to Rouses Point. We’re performing Franck’s ‘Sonate for Violin and Piano in A Major.’ It’s a great piece.”

The Silent Auction begins at 6 p.m. and features items such as dinner for two at Texas Roadhouse, first-edition books and gift certificates to Archer Bodyworks.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds will fund a spring reunion concert with featured guest conductors Richard Probert, Champlain Valley Oratorio Society founding director, and returning directors David Neiweem and Miano. The May concert features the choir and a full orchestra.

In December, Champlain Valley Voices performs “Too Hot to Handel” in collaboration with the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir.

Becker is thrilled to perform Saturday’s concert at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts.

“People need to look at that as a space where concerts can happen,” Becker said.
