Dance party celebrates active kids

AuSABLE FORKS — Students at Holy Name School were the North Country winners of the Empire Blue Cross Get Active, Get Fit School Challenge competition.

Out of the 58 schools that participated, 15 in the North Country were awarded a dance party, including St. Bernard’s School in Saranac Lake and Holy Family School in Malone. The party is hosted by Radio Disney AM1460 for the highest percentages of participation in the challenge.

The AuSable Forks and Saranac Lake students held their party on Tuesday.

For the entire month of November, all 63 Holy Name School students from grades kindergarten through six had 100 percent participation in the 20 minutes of exercise a day that was logged by teachers at school, earning them first place. “We’re working on better health in school and the importance of nutrition and exercising,” Holy Name Principal Christine Reynolds said after the party in AuSable Forks.

But fitness at the school doesn’t stop with winning the competition.

Holy Name students do brain-gym activities, short exercises in the classroom that help them get re-focused between lessons. Before school starts for the day, students are encouraged to walk or run in the gym and record the miles that they have completed. “It’s a way to keep them healthy and focused on the school day,” Reynolds said.
