PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team improved to a perfect 10-0-0 on the year with a 1-0 nonconference win against Utica College Tuesday night at the Field House Soccer Complex.
The Cardinals controlled play throughout much of the first half and held an 11-2 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes. The Pioneers (4-5-0) were able to slow Plattsburgh down a bit in the second half where each team fired three shots.
“They were playing defensive minded in the first half,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury said. “We took control and had the ball most of the half.”
Plattsburgh’s Nick Parrella scored the lone goal of the game at 32:20 on a header shot from Erik Hakim. Mike Payne’s corner kick was redirected on a header by Hakim, finding Parrella who was able to put the ball in the back of the net to tally the game-winner and his third of the year.
“Payne and Hamilton played great,” Waterbury said. “They provided a steady influence for the offense.”
The game got choppy in the final five minutes, but the Cardinals were able to keep Utica off the board to pick up their third-straight shutout and sixth of the season.
“We struggled to adjust early in the second half,” added Waterbury. “Eventually we were able to gain control again.”
Andy Heighington made two saves in the win, pushing his record to 9-0-0 for Plattsburgh State. Anthony Caruso turned away three shots in the loss for the Pioneers.
The Cardinals hit the road this weekend for back-to-back conference games at SUNY Cortland and Oswego State. Plattsburgh travels to Cortland for a 4 p.m. start on Friday before wrapping up the weekend in Oswego for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
“This is probably the biggest weekend for us this year.” Waterbury said.
