PLATTSBURGH — Two upsets in conference championship games Saturday dashed whatever slim hopes Plattsburgh State had of making the NCAA Division III Tournament in men’s hockey this month.
Plattsburgh State, finishing its season at 19-7-1, needed considerable help to keep its playoff hopes alive. Norwich’s loss to Babson in the ECAC East final and Utica’s loss in the ECAC West semifinals ended the Cardinals’ hopes. Despite the setbacks, Norwich and Utica both earned at-large bid, joining the eight conference tournament champions in the field of 11.
The automatic bids went to Babson (ECAC East), Wentworth (ECAC Northeast), Massachusetts-Dartmouth (MASCAC), Bowdoin (NESCAC,) Oswego (SUNYAC), Adrian (MCHA), St. John’s (MIAC) and two-time defending champion St. Norbert from the NCHA.
In first-round games Wednesday: Babson will host Wentworth, with the winner playing at Norwich on Saturday. Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host St. John’s, with the winner playing at St. Norbert on Saturday. Bowdoin will host Massachusetts-Dartmouth, with the winner playing at Utica on Saturday.
One quarterfinal game is set for Saturday: Oswego playing at Adrian.
The semifinals and championship rounds will be played in Lake Placid the weekend of March 15-16.
