10 YEARS AGO (2002)

▶ Nicky Viti (women's basketball) and B. J. McGrane (men's soccer) are named Plattsburgh State athletes of the year.

▶ Saranac Lake's Adam Van Nortwick breaks a 20-year-old school record for the mile run with a time of 4:20.53.

▶ Ticonderoga's Tara Vilardo pitches a no-hitter in the opener and chips in with 5 hits in Game 2 as the Sentinels sweep Tupper Lake in softball.

▶ Peru's Chris Henderson breaks the section record for the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.6 and later in the week, turns in a time of 44.2 seconds to shatter a 36-year-old school record in the 400 meters.

▶ Amanda Abbott of Lake Placid pitches a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts an 11-0 win over Schroon Lake.

▶ Ashley Wheeler, Savannah O'Connor and Katie Johnston lead the way as Chateaugay rallies from 2 games down to beat Malone 3-2 in volleyball.

▶ Justin Gardner pitches a 4-hitter and hits a grand slam in the 7th to give NAC a 7-3 win over PHS.

▶ Shannon Kane's sacrifice fly in the top of the 7th lifts Seton Catholic to a 4-3 win over previously unbeaten PHS in softball.

▶ Crown Point's Fallon Woods and Sierra Harrington combine to no-hit Elizabethtown-Lewis.

20 YEARS AGO (1992)

▶ Levander Choplin takes first in the 100, 200 and 400 relay as Peru tops Northeastern Clinton in a showdown of unbeatens in boys' track.

▶ Carrie Nutt and Amy Nutt lead Northeastern Clinton past Seton Catholic 67-66. The Cougars win the meet on the second tiebreaker — seven seconds to six for the Knights.

▶ Felicia Reyes scores Pam Dashnaw with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th to give Peru an 11-10 win over Saranac Lake.

▶ Saranac's Andy Sampica pitches a 2-hitter with 16 strikeouts in Saranac's 11-0 win over Tupper Lake.

▶ Ticonderoga's Jeremy Hall bests his section discus record by nearly 7 feet with a throw of 168 feet, 5 inches.

▶ Peru's Sean Clute leaps 6 feet, 6 inches to break the 6-5 high-jump mark of MAI's Mike Shene set in 1974.

25 YEARS AGO (1987)

E Kathy Brandell Champagne captures the Ottawa 10K in 35 minutes, 20 seconds.

▶ Pete Ewald signs a free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills.

▶ Kassy McIntyre (sprints), Tammy Rule (distance) and Patti Joyal (throws) lead AuSable Valley to a 66-65 win over Peru.

▶ Lori Lamora drives in 9 runs with 5 hits to lead Saranac to a 27-6 victory over St. John's.

▶ Steve DeCarlo pitches a 5-hitter and helps his cause with a 2-run double in Beekmantown's 5-3 win over previously unbeaten NAC.

▶ Travis Angevine belts 2 homers to power Peru past St. John's 12-7.

30 YEARS AGO (1982)

▶ Anna Pulsifer rips a grand slam to lead unbeaten Elizabethtown-Lewis to a 14-6 win over Chazy.

▶ Mike Henrich's 2-run homer in the top of the 8th gives Peru a 3-1 win over MAI.

▶ Spike Loreman rips 2 homers and Tom Mousseau pitches a 4-hitter to lead AuSable Valley past Ticonderoga 9-2.

▶ Ticonderoga's Kendall Thompson clears 12 feet, 3 inches to set a school record for the pole vault.

▶ Doug Thatcher, down to his final strike in the last of the 7th, connects for a grand slam, lifting Crown Point to a 14-11 triumph over Westport.

▶ Rich Hawkes, in his first meet, wins the high jump with a leap of 6 feet to give Peru a 73-68 win over AuSable Valley.

▶ Beekmantown freshman Beccy Prim scores 2,590 points to break Paula Maynard's week-old record in the pentathlon.

40 YEARS AGO (1972)

▶ Frank Hughes tosses a one-hitter and freshman Dale White knocks in 3 runs to lead Ticonderoga to a 12-2 win over Lake Placid.

▶ Freshman Mike DeZalia strikes out 15 batters and Dave Roth delivers 3 hits in Schroon Lake's 13-1 win over Keene.

▶ Russ Keller socks a 2-run homer and Carl Dragoon adds a 2-run double as PHS topples previously unbeaten NAC 9-4.

▶ Steve Manley pitches a 5-hitter and Mike Gregory hits a 2-run double, giving Keene a 4-2 win over Westport.

▶ Kenny Anderson pitches a 3-hit shutout to outduel Saranac's Steve Parker who gives up only 4 hits in a 2-0 loss to Moriah. Kevin Harris accounts for both runs with a 2-run single.

▶ Beekmantown's Rene Leonard pitches a one-hitter in a 10-0 win over NCCS. Randy LaBombard's double to lead off the 7th ends the no-hit bid.

50 YEARS AGO (1962)

▶ Toby Ahrent pitches a 2-hitter with 18 strikeouts and also goes 3-for-4 in Willsboro's 8-1 win over Moriah.

▶ Ray Rankin raps a 3-run homer in the top of the 7th to send Beekmantown on to a 13-11 victory over MAI.

▶ Mike Quinn smacks a 2-run homer in the 7th to give unbeaten Westport a 9-7 win over Elizabethtown-Lewis. Alvin Gates has a grand slam for the Eagles while Warren White homers for the Lions.

▶ Carl Mousseau goes 4-for-5 and Rance McKenna and Chip Dandrow contribute 3 hits apiece as MAI erupts for 10 runs in the 8th to beat St. John's 15-6.

▶ John Kennedy goes 4-for-4 to lead Champlain to an 8-4 win over Ellenburg.

▶ Brent Coryer pitches a one-hitter and Mike Holland goes 2-for-4 to lead Saranac past Chazy 7-1.

▶ Mineville's Gene Thompson tosses the discus a meet record 153 feet, 2 inches and also wins the shot put with a throw of 53-3 in the Plattsburgh Invitational. Teammate Ralph Paden wins the mile in 4:49.2.

▶ Altona's Steve Deyo pitches a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and Dick Atwood goes 3-for-4 in an 11-3 win over Champlain.

60 YEARS AGO (1952)

E Winning pitcher Ron MacDonald helps his cause with 3 doubles, a single and 4 RBI in Willsboro's 11-1 win over Elizabethtown.

▶ Jerry Desgroseillers scores the winning run on a wild pick-off attempt as Chateaugay nips Rouses Point 5-4.

▶ Lefty Bob Glode pitches a no-hitter in MAI's 20-2 thumping of Mineville. Ray Watkins belts a 2-run homer and Jim Brown adds a 2-run triple.

▶ Bill Garrow scores the winning run on a wild pitch and freshman Ralph Mills picks up the win in relief as Dannemora edges Keeseville 10-9.

▶ Al Pageau is the winning pitcher in both games as unbeaten Lyon Mountain sweeps St. Joseph's of Malone 14-0, 6-0.

70 YEARS AGO (1942)

E Kenny O'Connell raps out 3 hits while Daigle and Tourville add 2 each in MAI's 11-1 drubbing of PHS.
