Hornets oust another higher seed for tennis title

PLATTSBURGH — Beekmantown coach Dan Rillahan said he and Plattsburgh High coach Peter Luguri knew the team championship would come down to the No. 2 doubles.

After losing the first set, the Hornets duo of Chirag Patel and Chris Gray edged Beekmantown's Spencer Keable and Willis Reid-Breyette, 6-3, 6-3, to take the match.

The Hornets, seeded fourth, won the Section VII boys' tennis crown with a 3-2 win over the third-seeded Eagles Tuesday at Plattsburgh High.

It was another win over a higher seed for Plattsburgh High, which sent top-seeded Northeastern Clinton packing in the semifinals on Monday.

Beekmantown was also the defending champion.

Mark Price and Eric Mitchell, the finalists in the individual boys' singles, won singles matches for Beekmantown.

But the Hornets swept both doubles matches, and Alex Racine won the No. 3 singles with a tie-breaking win in the second set.

Shea Crockett and Danny O'Halloran won the No. 1 singles for the Hornets in two sets, 6-4, 6-1, over Beekmantown's Charles Payson and Dylan Riley.

"They were all good matches," Rillahan said. "The tiebreaker in third singles was a close one."
