Chiefs open with bang

Chiefs open CVAC indoor track and field season with victories

PLATTSBURGH — Saranac wasted little time reminding the rest of the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference why it won the indoor track and field titles last season.

The Chiefs opened the season with a bang, with both the girls and boys teams capturing victories in the season-opening meet Tuesday at the Plattsburgh State Field House.

Saranac captured first in the 640 relay, the 600, the 1,600 relay, the long jump and the shot put in the boys' event while the girls captured first place in the 300, 3,000 and the shot put.

Saranac Lake's Alex Beaudoin was a two-time winner in the 55 (6.7) and tthe 300 (38.2).

Barrett Waling captured the 3,200 (10:35.2) and Mitchell Ryan the 1,600 (4:52.5) for Seton Catholic while both runners teamed with Bowen Christopher and Evan Page to win the 3,200 relay (9:11.1).

Other winners for the boys were Ticonderoga's Jay Hebert in the 55 hurdles (7.6). Peru's Shawn Hendrix in the triple jump (43-9.2), Jared McLean in the 1,000 (2:58.4) and Bryce Schnaars in the high jump (6-2.2). Saranac's Cory Duval in the shot put (45-7), Micah Patterson in the 600 (1:28.1) and Jake Spear in the long jump (21-2.5).

Saranac Lake's Vanessa Salamy and Plattsburgh's Emma Deshaies each captured a pair of victories in the girls' event.

Salamy won the 55 (7.7) and the 55 hurdles (9.4) while Deshaies captured the 1,500 (5:18.5) and the 600 (1:50.3).

The Hornets' Brooke Knight captured first in the long jump (13-9) and Khila Pecoraro the triple jump (29-3.5).

The Chiefs' winners were Ellen Thew in the 300 (45.7), Morgan Kelly in the 3,000 (12:43.5) and Victoria Phaneauf in the shot put (32-5).

Ashley Leta won first place in the 1,000 (3:16.7) and Lea Perry the high jump (4-10) for the Indians.

The Seton Catholic team of Margaret Champagne, Phobe Christopher, Maddy Munn and Melissa Whyman took first in the 3,200 relay (11:01.3).
