B'town spikers give it best shot

PLATTSBURGH — The Beekmantown Eagles rolled through their Section VII schedule with a perfect 17-0 record, and only dropped two games all season long.

On Saturday, the Eagles took on Section II's Johnstown in the NYSPHSAA Class B volleyball quarterfinals at Clinton Community College.

The Eagles fought all the way until the end, but fell to the Sir Bills in five games.

Johnstown took a commanding 2-0 lead with two 25-22 wins, but Beekmantown captured the next two games, 25-13 and 25-21, to force a deciding fifth game.

"It was a really tough, back-and-forth, point-for-point first two games," Eagles coach Shana Fessette-Hileman said. "We made a couple of errors towards the end and they were able to reach 25 before us.

"We served and received so well, and then finally got our offense going in the final games. The first two games we were playing more defense, but after that we were in this all of the way.

Johnstown ended the Eagles chances in the fifth game with a 25-18 victory.

"We just couldn't get any rhythm," Fessette-Hileman said. "When a team like that gets up six or seven points it's really hard to creep back up on them. They are a good team; they play all year round.

"We had a great game tonight. For a young team to come back make it to five games it was pretty impressive for this group of girls. We didn't give up, and we gave 100 percent. I can't be upset with them, they worked hard and gave their best, but unfortunately it didn't fall our way this evening."

Kendra LaFountain had a "phenomenal defensive night," according to Fessette-Hileman. She finished with 33 digs on the evening. Chelsey Besaw also played strong defensively with 18 digs.

Jordynne Ales finished with 11 points for Beekmantown, while Kiana Archer had six points and 40 assists. Molly Sorrell finished with six points and 11 kills, while Shannon Ryan chipped in with seven points, six blocks, 13 kills and nine digs.

PLATTSBURGH — The Patriots ran into a tough Voorheesville squad and fell in three games.

Belle O'Toole added six digs while Noelle Miller and Miranda O'Neill each added five digs for the Patriots.

"We absolutely knew that we had an uphill climb," AuSable Valley coach Sandra Hoey said. "I thought it would be a better match, but that comes with lack of experience and a lot of nerves.

"We have a young team and we know what we have to strive for next year. Voorheesville is an excellent team and they have an awful lot of experience."
