Peru pulls away from NCCS in fourth

Chiefs win defensive struggle with Hornets

PERU — Brianna Hackett scored 15 points, including four 3-pointers, as Peru held off Northeastern Clinton, 43-37, in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls' basketball Thursday night.

Jessica Decker added seven points and 10 rebounds for the Indians.

Paige Southwick tossed in 11 points for the Cougars, and Skyler Hebert was next with seven.

The game was close all the way with Northeastern Clinton taking a slim 31-30 advantage into the fourth. The Indians outscored the Cougars, 13-6, in the final stanza to prevail.

"The third was back and forth, and then in the fourth we played much better defense," Peru coach Ryon O'Connell said. "We forced some turnovers and made our foul shots. We executed our set plays in the fourth and got some big baskets down stretch.

"It was a hard-fought game — there were a lot of fouls. Both teams did a nice job keeping their composure. It was a nice win."
