Leonard's hot start leads Eagles

BEEKMANTOWN — Alyssa Leonard stole the show — again.

Leonard placed first in all four events Friday en route to claiming the top all-around score in Beekmantown's 156.50-150.05 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls' gymnastics victory over Peru.

Her all-around score of 35.70 was highlighted by a 9.3 on her floor exercise and a 9.2 on the balance beam.

Beekmantown, the defending CVAC and Section VII champion, is now 2-0 with wins against the only other two teams in the conference.

Leonard, a sophomore who finished second last year all around in the Section VII championships, grabbed the top spots in all but one event in the Eagles' season-opening meet against Plattsburgh High on Tuesday. On that day, she took first in the uneven parallel bars, balance beam, floor exercise and all around. The only event she didn't win — the vault — she tied for second.

Beekmantown's Lydia Gricoski took second in all around Friday with a score of 31.60, and Peru's Alexandria Brown (31.1), Lexi Trombley (30.7) and Molly Lawliss (30.65) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Gricoski had two second- place finishes for the Indians (0-1) in the balance beam and a tie in the uneven parallel bars.

Beekmantown's Brielle Cerne rounded out the top six all-around finishers with a 30.35.

The next meet will pit Peru against host Plattsburgh High on Tuesday. Beekmantown returns to action at Plattsburgh next Friday.
