Cotrona wins third Mid-Season Pentathlon

PLATTSBURGH — AuSable Valley's Sierra Cotrona received some stiff competition from Plattsburgh's Alexis Kelley, but it wasn't enough as Cotrona captured her third-consecutive Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Mid-season Pentathlon on Friday.

Plattsburgh, however, took home the team victory over AuSable Valley, Peru and Moriah at the meet which was held at Stafford Middle School.

The pentathlon is a meet that consists of five individual events, the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 200 IM. Points are awarded from 20-to-1 for the top 16 finishers.

Cotrona captured first place in three events, the 100 backstroke (1:09.36), 100 breaststroke (1:14.77) and the 100 freestyle (58.69). She finished second in the other two races, the 100 butterfly (1:07.94) and the 200 IM (2:25.38).

Alexis Kelley took first in two events, the 200 IM (2:24.95) and the 100 butterfly (1:06.32). She finished second in two other events, the 100 backstroke (1:09.93) and the 100 freestyle (59.51).

Brooke Kelley finished third overall for the Hornets, and took home a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.46).

Rounding out the top six finishers were Peru's Mary Barkla (fourth), and Plattsburgh's Taylor Hall (fifth) and Kelsey Primard (sixth).
